SquareRoot Memories: Privacy Policy

Effective 16 October 2026

SquareRoot Memories does not collect your data. Your photos stay on your device. The only time anything leaves it is when you connect your own server, and then it goes to that server and nowhere else.

Who we are

SquareRoot Memories (“the app”) is made by Scott Brookes, trading as SquareRoot (“we”, “us”). The app shows the photos in your library on a wall that you can pan and zoom across.

What we collect

Nothing. The app has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics, no tracking and no crash reporting of its own. We do not run any server that the app talks to, so we never receive your photos, your searches, your settings or any information about you.

If you have chosen to share diagnostics with app developers in your iPhone’s Privacy settings, Apple may pass us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. We cannot tell who they come from.

Your photos

The app asks for access to your Photos library so that it can draw the wall. It only reads your photos. It never changes, deletes or uploads them.

If your photos are stored in iCloud Photos, iOS may download them from your iCloud account to show them. That is handled by Apple and your own iCloud account, not by us.

You can change or withdraw the app’s access at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos.

Search (Pro)

Pro can search your photos by what is in them, for example “dog”, “beach” or “red”. To do this the app looks at small copies of your photos on your device, using Apple’s Vision framework, and saves a short list of labels and colours for each photo in a file on your device. This work happens entirely on your device. Nothing from it is sent anywhere.

You can erase that list at any time with Settings > Search > Search Again From Scratch, or by deleting the app.

Your own servers (Pro)

Pro lets you connect your own Immich or PhotoPrism server. When you do, the app contacts only the address you type in. It sends that server the requests needed to show its photos, which include the words you search for and requests for pictures, and the server’s API key or app password so that it lets the app in.

The key or password is kept in your device’s Keychain and is sent only to that server. Pictures from the server are kept in a cache on your device so they load faster. We never see any of this. What your server does with the requests it receives is up to whoever runs it.

If you connect to a server using an address that starts with http instead of https, the connection is not encrypted. That is common on a home network. If you connect over the internet, use https.

Purchases

Memories Pro is bought through Apple. Apple handles the payment and tells the app whether you own Pro. We never see your payment details or your Apple Account.

What is kept on your device

All of it stays on your device and is removed when you delete the app. You can also remove a server in Settings > Servers, which deletes its key.

Children

The app collects no information from anyone, including children.

Your rights

Because we hold no personal information about you, there is nothing for us to show you, correct or delete. If you have questions about information held on your own server, please contact whoever runs it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.

SquareRoot Memories is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Immich or PhotoPrism. Immich and PhotoPrism are trademarks of their respective owners.
